U.S. Extends Ethiopia Travel Warning

Travel Warning Ethiopia
Not Safe. State Department warned U.S. citizens of the risk of traveling to Ethiopia.

By U.S. State Department,

The State Department continues to warn U.S. citizens of the risks of travel to Ethiopia due to the potential for civil unrest related to sporadic and unpredictable anti-government protests that began in November 2015.

The U.S. Embassy’s ability to provide consular services in many parts of the country may be limited without warning due to the government’s restrictions on mobile and internet communications and the unpredictable nature of the current security situation. This replaces the Travel Warning of October 21, 2016.

The Government of Ethiopia declared a State of Emergency effective October 8, 2016 that includes provisions allowing for the arrest of individuals without a court order for activities they may otherwise consider routine, such as communication, consumption of media, attending gatherings, engaging with certain foreign governments or organizations, and violating curfews.

Additionally, the Government of Ethiopia routinely does not inform the U.S. Embassy of detentions of U.S. citizens in Ethiopia. The full text of the decree implementing the State of Emergency is available on the U.S. Embassy’s website.

Internet, cellular data, and phone services have been periodically restricted or shut down without warning throughout the country, impeding the U.S. Embassy’s ability to communicate with U.S. citizens in Ethiopia. You should have alternate communication plans in place, and let your family and friends know this may be an issue while you are in Ethiopia.

Avoid demonstrations and large gatherings, continuously assess your surroundings, and evaluate your personal level of safety. Remember that the government may use force and live fire in response to demonstrations, and that even gatherings intended to be peaceful can be met with a violent response or turn violent without warning.

U.S. citizens in Ethiopia should monitor their security situation and have contingency plans in place in case you need to depart suddenly.

If you are living in or intending to travel to Ethiopia, please refer to the Safety and Security section of the Country Specific Information for Ethiopia for additional useful information.

Due to the unpredictability of communication in the country, the Department of State strongly advises U.S. citizens to register your mobile number with the U.S. Embassy to receive security information via text or SMS, in addition to enrolling in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP).

  1. What irony! Do you (tesfanews) really believe what the US State Department say? Or you just do this by picking and choosing one which appears to be relevant for your propaganda purposes? Why can’t you report when the same institution slams Eritrean regime as the ‘worst human abusers in the planet’, at least for the sake of your profession as ‘journalists’.

    1. Let us differentiate between Fact and Truth.
Simple e.g will be “worst human abusers in the planet”. It may sound truth (for people who want to believe it and work for it), but in reality the fact (you can see, hear, touch, taste and smell) is different on the ground.
I would rather be in a fact finding mission than in a truth find mission.

      1. Dear Selam
We would love to see the ‘fact’ that proves Eritrea is not the worst human abuser. Please, I beg you not to invite me to get one way ticket and go to the country under the regime you are defending for.

    2. U can pretend and write with different pen names.. It doesn’t matter, Ur beloved Woyane-Tigray is on borrowed time soon they are going to be destroyed violently!! TPLF/Woyane’s-Tigray a minority regime that hails from 6% Tigreans to dominate the economic, political and social life of 96% Ethiopians is going to be history. Sooner than u think. And soon u are going to be forgotten by ur masters the West, just like they forgot Hosni Mubarak when the ppl came for his neck.????

      1. Bro how many times do you use the word weyae a day? If any one who disagree wz u is weyane ……. that os lame argument try to convince people with fact.

    3. Saleh Afaf,

The US travel warning for Eritrea has been around for over 14 years and it has never been lifted despite the country’s proven safety and peaceful life. That warning may have worked for some time but as the growing awareness about Eritrea’s safety and serenity by people of the world grows by the day, despite the mainstream media negative and damaging propaganda, updating or lifting the warning may not bother Eritrea much as the tourism sector is taking off and showing a sign of growth from year to year. So I don’t see why you want this 14 year old politically motivated warning to be reported as something new. Are that naive or ignorant?

      1. Dear Meaza
Do you recall when many countries in the civilised world including the US advise their citizens not to travel to France following the terrorist attack last year? According to your argument, France should be considered as unsafe country as Ethiopia.
What has happened in Ethiopia recently is a matter of temporary security issues, which any country should be concerned about to see their citizens travelling to. This is not permanent security issue, a state of emergency can be declared anytime anywhere whenever it is required, and I am sure Ethiopia has now learned lessons from the past failed act of terror instigated by Saudi and a puppet man, pres Barack Hussein Obama. These street thugs and terrorist groups are now being picked and punished so they will never do it again. But the honest question you should ask yourself is why you guys are completely obsessed with Ethiopian affairs while ignoring grievances and agony of your people at home and abroad.
I am a Muslim, but these terrorists, that are trying to destroy the peace loving and hard working Hebesha people and their culture and identity would never represent us.

        1. Nice try painting the genuine resistance against the Ethiopian apartheid minority regime as Islamic terrorism. Need I to remind you that the once who are waging war in Gonder against the apartheid regime are almost entirely Christian freedom fighters. Sentek, you can’t fool anyone by pretending to be a Muslim. Your likes and your minority regime has been shamelessly lying to the Ethiopian people and the world for the past 25 years. No one takes you seriously anymore. So, stop waisting your time and accept your dying apartheid regime’s fate.

  2. This is a political game by the USA whom they are supporting and advising Ethiopia based upon lessons learned from other countries experience with every plan possible to subdued or control the situation. Basically a soft response for a challenging situation.
CONCERNED AND EXTENDED measures by USA means APPROVE and MAINTAIN period.

  3. Let them kill each other and what should Eritrea do about?just see and beneift. When two of Satans is on a war field the rest is safe and when they become weak hitting them hard until they will not weak up again.
If you go and see Aigaforum(Isaias Abraha fm AdiGrat)first page yesterday you could see that Weyane are so happ that three of the European countries are satisffied that their citizens to visit Ethiopa but now Evrything has change agian now,Weyane Tegaru isa Zero and you can not find him anywhere,he’s just gone!!

  4. When the puppeteer stops using its puppet, the puppet becomes worthless. Just like Hosni Mubarak — when the US dumped him. And soon, Woyane will try to bring China to be its puppeteer, and the former boss will come to collect.. and it’s going to end badly for Woyane/TPLF regime.

Lately.. Ugumesh talking about China is good for us — we need more relations with China than with US blah blah..LOL Woyane is doomed, the revolution of the Amhara against the domination of Tigrayans is already begun — Amhara revolution through the barrel of the gun. And it’s to late for reconciliation now. Woyane are done.

  5. Every time I came to Tesfanews and read Everything I slept well and measure by “Tesfa” and does not need any food:-to get to thepoint that everyone knows Eritrea Always slow but is Always safest.Eritrea knows what she can and Eritrea did not promise much but work hard for the future. But the only our problem is Weyane.Weyane not deserve respect, not understanding,Weyane is destructive and pathetic and it should be combated in different ways, defeated, nock and humilaitea everyday,as long as it takes.Evey time Eritrea is moving forward Weyane means we kill Weyane everytime and Weyane needs to Count this.

  6. Hypocrite US! Just cut the funding you provide to this gang and this beggar govt will know its place immediately. But the US, wants to have the cake and eat it too, and that will lead to the US losing both sides. The weyane, because it’s going to fall, eventually and the ethiopian people, because they’ve finally woken up to your double dealing.

  7. What ever Weyane lackeys and cadres says about the warning, it has been proven since October that US travel warning are deadly for the tourism industry of Ethiopia as it is to any given country. Maintaining this travel restrictions or warnings will further damage the aid dependent, debt ridden malelit economy anyway.

    2. The state of emergency has shattered the ‘Africa’s economic giant’ narrative that has been peddled by Mekelle illiterates and their handlers in their QUEST FOR LEGITIMACY of the Menlik goons. The US travel warning is like putting the icing on this beautifully woyane-made cake….. and its implication is far reaching.

Having said that though, whether woyane decides to lift or keep the sanction in place wouldn’t make an iota of a difference for its survival from now on. Politically, economically, diplomatically and militarily, both are costly.Either way, woyane is doomed. It’s just a matter of time!!!

  8. UK: No More Travel Warnings From The FCO About Ethiopia

Ethiopia is no longer on the list of countries that the Foreign and Commonwealth Office advise against visiting for tourism.

THE FOREIGN and Commonwealth Office, who publish information on the safety and temperament of countries all around the world, announced last week that Ethiopia is no longer on their list of places that people should avoid except in cases where:

“…essential travel to the Amhara and Oromia regions”, is necessary.

Germany and Belgium declared Ethiopia safe several weeks ago, however just three districts are still classified as being zones where only essential travel should take place. These are Tsegede, Mirab Armacho and Tach Amarcho in North Gonder.

Holiday-makers and families with Ethiopian connections will welcome the news, which opens-up travel options to the historic east African country at a special time of year for the region. Two major annual celebrations happen in January – Ethiopian Orthodox Christmas (or, ‘Genna’) on 7 January and Epiphany, or ‘Timkat’, on 19 January. Despite previous safety concerns, both events have consistently attracted a large influx of visitors who collectively contribute $30 million to the country each year.
