Foreign Help Building Eritrea Bases NOT Violation Unless Benefits Eritrean Military: UN

assab military base
The burden of proving guilt. The use of Eritrea’s land, waters and airspace by other countries to conduct military operations in a third state is NOT a sanctions violation as long as the external support for the construction of the military installations, such as the provision of technical assistance, training, financial and other assistance, doesn’t benefit the Eritrean military directly. UN unable to prove that yet.

By Michelle Nichols | Reuters,

United Nations sanctions monitors warned in an annual report released on Friday that possible foreign support for a new military base and seaport in Eritrea and the presence of foreign weapons and equipment were likely in violation of an arms embargo.

The monitors told the U.N. Security Council last year that Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates had established a military presence in Eritrea as part of the Saudi-led campaign against Houthi rebels in Yemen, which lies just 40 km (25 miles) across the Red Sea from the poor Horn of Africa nation. No Evidence of Eritrean Support to Somalia Islamist Group Al-Shabaab: UN Monitoring Reports

NO EVIDENCE OF ERITREA SUPPORT TO AL-SHABAAB. OK! If the initial and principal allegation of supporting Al-Shabaab become disproved and if Eritrea still maintains its commitment to the Qatari mediation with Djibouti, then what is the justifications to continue the sanctions?

By TesfaNews,

After five years of imposition of sanctions for alleged support for Al-Shabaab, the UN Monitoring Group today clears Eritrea of all the allegations of supporting the Somalia Islamist groups.

The Somalia – Eritrea Monitoring Group (SEMG), in its annual council report that was released today, states that:

The Monitoring Group has found no evidence of Eritrean support to Al‑Shabaab during the course of its present mandate. The Monitoring Group does not, however, rule out the possibility that Eritrea may be providing some assistance to elements within Al-Shabaab without detection, but it is the overall assessment of the Monitoring Group that Eritrea is a marginal actor in Somalia.” Continue reading No Evidence of Eritrean Support to Somalia Islamist Group Al-Shabaab: UN Monitoring Reports

A Timely Call for the Annulment of UN Sanction on Eritrea

No verifiable evidence, real or imaginary, ever presented to show any wrong doing by Eritrea. Therefore, no reason to maintain the unjust UN sanction.

By Amanuel Tseggai,

On this day four years ago, Eritreans inside and abroad were at a total loss to learn the imposition of UN sanction against their beloved country. And the swift action they took on February 22nd, 2010 denouncing the UNSC 1907 resolution and demanding for justice was a reflection of their displeasure towards such illegal and unjust act against a sovereign nation. Eritrea Expecting UN Sanction Lifted Soon

Lift the Sanction. The basis UN justified for the sanction doesn’t exist anymore

By Madote,

Matthew Russell Lee, a reporter working at the United Nations Headquarter, says Eritrean diplomats believe the sanctions against Eritrea are close to being removed.

Some Eritrean diplomats believe they may be close from being “taken off” of sanctions.” Said Matthew, in a report released last Wednesday to subscribers.

Mattew, who has obtained a leaked Somali Eritrea Monitoring Group (SEMG) report, also says Eritrea will meet with UN officials scheduled for 7 or 8 December 2013 in Paris, France. Continue reading Eritrea Expecting UN Sanction Lifted Soon

UN Recounts Somalia Charcoal Disputes, Arms Filings, Eritrea Meeting

December: UN Monitoring Group to meet with Eritrean representatives in Paris

By Matthew Russell Lee,

In the run-up to the November 26 closed door briefing of the UN Security Council on Somalia and Eritrea sanctions, the new Monitoring Group coordinator Jarat Chopra raised to the United Arab Emirates, Oman and others the shipping and sale of charcoal from Somalia in violation of the sanctions.

The UAE and Oman did not immediate respond to inquiries about particular ships. The UAE prefers the re-sale of seized charcoal to its destruction under the supervision and advice of the UN Environment Program, despite concerns about corruption in re-sale that have been raised. Eritrea Breaching the “Resolution”?

Denying Eritrea for full and timely access to the periodic reports and produce no material evidence becomes the two norms of the Monitoring Group

By TesfaNews,

There is nothing more revealing than witnessing the honour of the United Nations dragged into the mud for it conveniently allows itself to be seen as a tool for a club of big boys intent on bullying smaller countries through some ludicrous groups and individuals within the organisation.

The Somalia-Eritrea Monitoring Group (SEMG) was one of those discredited outfits of the United Nations designed for such purposes.

Last week, the group’s annual report to the Security Council’s sanctions committee on Eritrea and Somalia has got a fierce criticism from a number of Security Council members, notably Russia, for its “biased and groundless conclusions and recommendations.”  Continue reading Eritrea Breaching the “Resolution”?

UN, US, France and UK Violates Somalia Sanction: Monitoring Report

Does the control freaks at the UN Monitoring Group have the guts to call a spade a spade? We don’t think so!

By Matthew Russell Lee,

The UN’s Somalia sanctions report, in portions scarcely reported by Western wire services, notes violations by France, the US, the UK and the UN itself.

Can the UN violate its own sanctions? It does: see Report at Page 333, Paragraph 88 and below.

The UK among other things brought in weapons for its private security provider, G4S Security Services.

Now the UK’s Nicholas Kay is in charge of the UN’s Somalia mission; while responsive, he has declined to answer about UN Mine Action Service chief David Bax Continue reading UN, US, France and UK Violates Somalia Sanction: Monitoring Report
