In an often-forgotten corner of the Horn of Africa, Eritrea’s capital boasts one of the world’s finest collections of early 20th-century architecture – with UNESCO awarding it World Heritage Site status earlier this year.
Following is a statement delivered by H.E. Hanna Simon, Ambassador of the State of Eritrea to France & Permanent Delegate to UNESCO, at the 39th Plenary Session of UNESCO’s General Conference that was held in Paris from October 30 – November 14, 2017.
Excellencies, Honourable President of the General Conference, Honourable Chairperson of the Executive Board, Honourable Director General of UNESCO, Distinguished Representatives, Ladies and Gentlemen,
First and foremost, allow me to express Eritrea’s appreciation of UNESCO’s assistance and cooperation in various educational, cultural and scientific projects. Diversity Resource International (DRI) held a “Leadership in Action” gathering in London to inspire the generation of effective leaders on Africa with the spotlight on Eritrea.

On Saturday 3rd of June 2017, Diversity Resource International (DRI) held a gathering at the St. Ethelburga’s center in the City of London under the theme “Leadership in Action”, a thought leader gathering to inspire the generation of effective leaders on Africa with the spotlight on Eritrea.
Makeda Coaston, a change maker, facilitator and senior cultural strategist, gave a brief speech focusing on African civilization and knowledge linking it to systematic enslavement of the Africa, and how colonialism of 400 years has hindered the continents success. Asmara art deco organizers Mr. Christophe and Dr. Conrad, the Arbate Asmara group, staged an exhibition depicting Asmara’s historic and art deco buildings at the grounds of the United Nations Office in Nairobi in collaboration with UNON and the Eritrean Embassy on Monday, April 3rd 2017.

On a dusty road leading travellers out of the southern outskirts of Asmara stands a small service station. Once owned by AGIP, an Italian petrol company, it was for decades the last place to fill up with fuel between the Eritrean capital and the southern towns of Decemhare and Mendefera, some 40km away. The largest of several similarly designed buildings all over Asmara, it is a modest construction, its mundane commercial purpose only partially belied by the unexpected elegance of the design.
