Somalia Gov’t Impounded Huge Sums of Money from UAE Plane

Mogadishu Airport security violated UAE Embassy Diplomatic immunity, pursuant to article 27 of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations, by search and seizure of $9.6m cash

The UAE Embassy claims the money was intended for the salary of the Somali and Puntland soldiers. The UAE has long been accused by the gov’t for interfering in Somalia’s internal affairs and suspect the money could be intended to destabilize the country.

Somali security officials said they have seized a large cache of money that arrived Sunday at Mogadishu airport from Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.

Why We Should Keep Out of Somalia’s Affairs

Last weekend, in response to a deadly attack on the Turkish embassy in Somalia that killed three and wounded nine, the U.S. government responded by saying that, “this cowardly act will not shake our commitment to continue working for the brighter, more democratic and prosperous future the people of Somalia deserve.”
