THE United Nations says unidentified gunmen have attacked a group of Eritrean asylum seekers in the eastern part of Sudan, kidnapping 14 of them.

UNCONFIRMED reports from Eastern Sudan indicates that Rashaida Bedouins and Sudanese security forces reportedly staged a deadly attack upon Eritrean refugees inside the Shagarab-1 refugee camp in eastern Sudan.

Refugees Drown in Attempted Sudanese Smuggling

The first Eritrean refugees start to arrive in the Eastern Sudan was in 1968 during the early years of Eritrea’s war of independence against Ethiopia. Among the three biggest camps in eastern Sudan, Shagarab currently houses more than 15,000 mostly Eritrean refugees in addition to some Ethiopians and Somalis.

AT LEAST eight asylum-seekers have drowned trying to cross a river in Sudan during an attempt to smuggle them out of a refugee camp, the UN refugee agency said Thursday.

Kidnappings in Eastern Sudan Refugee Camps Alarming: UNHCR

Hundreds of Israel-bound African refugees are being held hostage in the Sinai desert by smugglers demanding huge ransom to spare their lives.

The United Nations refugee agency today (25 Jan) called for international action to stop forced disappearances from camps in eastern Sudan that house Eritrean refugees, who may be held for ransom or trafficked for the purpose of forced marriage, sexual exploitation or bonded labour.
