Eritrea: Desert Locusts Control Operations Still Underway

Growing Desert Locust swarms continue to spread in the Horn of Africa with no apparent end in sight.

Control operations against Desert Locusts in Eritrea exceeded 34,500 hectares until February 6, 2020. According to Mr. Tedros Sium, Head of the Migratory Pests Control Unit of the Ministry of Agriculture, control operations are still underway in the Northern Red Sea Region of the country. Eritrea: Locust Swarm Put Under Control

Sorry, nothing to feast here. Locust swarm that crossed the border from Ethiopia’s Tigray region was put under control.

Desert Locust Outbreak Worsens in Ethiopia

If not controlled, the Desert Locusts could continue moving within Ethiopia and invade northeast Kenya, the western lowlands and highlands of Eritrea, the Red Sea coastal plains in Eritrea, and adjacent southern coastal areas in Sudan.

The Desert Locust (Schistocerca gregaria) infestation in Ethiopia has deteriorated, despite ongoing ground and aerial control operations. Together with the Ethiopian Federal Ministry of Agriculture and the Desert Locust Control Organization for Eastern Africa, Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) has called for immediate action to control the infestation.
