By RT.com,

Passengers from two rubber dinghies that sank just miles from the coast of Libya have told rescuers that as many as 240 migrants drowned attempting to make the journey to Italy. The UN says that 2016 has already seen a record number of migrant deaths at sea.

In one of the disasters, the boat left the Libyan coast at around 3am on Wednesday but lost buoyancy several hours later, according to Flavio di Giacomo, a spokesman for the UN’s International Organization for Migration (IOM). When the European patrol boat arrived, the survivors, who numbered 27, told rescuers that about 100 people had perished underwater. Twelve bodies, including those of three babies, have been recovered. Continue reading Over 240 Migrants Drown in 2 Shipwrecks off Libya Coast

U.S. Sets Stage for Libya-Style Regime Change in Eritrea?

By Glen Ford | BAR Executive Editor

The United States is methodically setting the stage for a so-called “humanitarian” military intervention against the small northeast African nation of Eritrea, under legal pretexts much like those used to justify NATO’s war of regime change against Libya, in 2011. As in Libya, the U.S. has hijacked the United Nations human rights apparatus to claim a “responsibility to protect” (R2P) Eritrea’s citizens from alleged abuses by their own government. War and regime change are the intended result. Continue reading U.S. Sets Stage for Libya-Style Regime Change in Eritrea?

Benghazi Smokescreen; Hiding Western War Crimes in Libya

The truth behind the smokescreen. What happened in Benghazi was not just a tragedy, but a blatant criminal act on the part of the Obama’s government.

By Thomas C. Mountain,

The recent Benghazi smokescreen produced by the US Congress may have tried to hide the war crimes committed by the USA and its western vassals in Libya but reality on the ground has blown all the smoke away bringing to light who the west really empowered once again, the Islamic State a.k.a. Da’esh.

Through out the Benghazi hearings no mention was made of the tens of thousands of Libyans that were massacred by the over 10,000 bombing raids flow by western pilots, part of a no fly zone enacted even though there was not a single aerial raid by Gaddafi prior to the imposition of such. No mention of this at the hearings of course, the fact that there was absolutely no need for a no fly zone because there never had been any bombings by Gaddafi of anyone in Libya during the entire rebellion. Ethiopia’s Anti-Extremist Policies Could Put It in Militants’ Crosshairs

Ethiopia could be dragged into the battle against ISIS. Government said lawmakers will meet and consider possible response to the crime. Yes, Egypt bombed Libya after ISIL commit similar crimes but Ethiopia is not Egypt and fighting ISIS is not Ethiopia’s business. Thread carefully!

By Siobhan O’Grady,

THE United States for years has praised Ethiopia’s fight against terrorism in East Africa, but that hard-line approach to extreme Islamism may have contributed to the bloody execution of dozens of Ethiopian Christians who were targeted by the Islamic State (ISIS) in Libya.

Addis Ababa has been long consumed with a bigger threat on their borders — against the militant group al-Shabab in neighboring Somalia. The slaughter of two groups of Christians, in Libya likely seeking work or passage to Europe, newly confronts Ethiopia with the world’s fastest-spreading insurgency.  Continue reading Ethiopia’s Anti-Extremist Policies Could Put It in Militants’ Crosshairs

Over 300 African Migrants Drowned in New Mediterranean Tragedy: UN

CRIME NOT TRAGEDY. This accident simply eclipses the October 2013 accident that claims the lives of 366 migrants off the coast of Lampedusa. As smuggling networks continued to act with virtual impunity, 2015 could be an even deadlier year than last year with 3,200 deaths.

By BBC,

AT LEAST 300 migrants are feared to have drowned after attempting to cross the Mediterranean Sea from North Africa this week in rough seas, the UN says.

UNHCR official Vincent Cochetel said it was a “tragedy on an enormous scale”.

Survivors brought to the Italian island of Lampedusa said they were forced to risk the bad weather on ill-equipped vessels by human traffickers in Libya. Continue reading Over 300 African Migrants Drowned in New Mediterranean Tragedy: UN

500 Feared Dead in Mediterranean Migrant Shipwreck

What is motivating migrants to make the hazardous crossing to Europe through the Mediterranean while knowing full that they too may end up dead like the hundreds before them. Is it because of the traffickers who are exploiting the political chaos and lack of security that has blighted Libya since 2011 or the good will and humanity of Europeans?

By AFP,

AS many as 500 migrants are feared to have drowned after traffickers rammed and sank their boat in what the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) described Monday as “the worst shipwreck in years“.

Horrific details of the shipwreck near Malta, told to IOM by survivors, came after dozens of African migrants were reported missing and feared dead after their boat sank off the coast of Libya on Sunday.  Continue reading 500 Feared Dead in Mediterranean Migrant Shipwreck
