Tourists in Ethiopia Attacked, Driver Killed

Ethiopia’s tourism revenue has taken a nose dive following US travel warnings. The country is projected to lose over $400 million from tourism in the current budget year.

A group of tourists were reportedly attacked and robbed in southern Ethiopia last week and their driver was shot and killed, according to a report by The Slovak Spectator, Slovakia’s only English-language newspaper.

The six Slovaks and four Czechs were attacked in the town of Mizan Teferi on November 7. They were robbed of their credit cards, money and other precious possessions. Irena Valentová from the Czech Foreign Affairs Ministry confirmed the incident to Novinky.cz website. She was quoted as saying that a female Slovak tourist was injured in the attack. Ethiopian Unrest Triggers Collapse in Tourism

Ethiopia tourism took a nosedive. Several thousands of international tourists have called off their planned trips to Ethiopia ever since authorities declare nationwide state of emergency.

A wave of anti-government protests and the imposition of a state of emergency has triggered a collapse in tourism bookings in Ethiopia, underlining the effect the unrest is having on one of Africa’s best-performing economies.

As the demonstrations spread across the country, governments, including the US, UK, Australia, Canada and Ireland, have advised their citizens against all non-essential travel to the country or Amhara and Oromia regions at the centre of the instability.
