Ethiopian Tokyo Marathon Winner Endeshaw Negesse Fails Doping Test (Update)

SHAMEFUL. The image of Ethiopian athletics has suffered once again great blows thanks to some selfish and lazy athletes such as Endeshaw Negesse. This disgraced runner robbed last year Ugandan reigning Olympic champion Stephen Kiprotich of his victory at the Tokyo Marathon by taking illegal drugs. The names of the other eight Ethiopian athletes will be announced in the coming weeks.

Tokyo Marathon winner Endeshaw Negesse has become the first Ethiopian named in connection with a failed drugs test following reports that as many as nine athletes from the distance running powerhouse are under investigation.

Endeshaw Negesse tested positive for Meldonium, the same recently banned substance which it emerged that Sweden’s Ethiopian-born former world 1500 metres champion Abeba Aregawi had failed for this week.

Ethiopian Athletes Under Scrutiny for Doping

CAN OF WORMS. Ethiopia has so far escaped widespread doping scandals as attention has instead centred on Russia and Kenya. However, the glare of the doping police has now switched to Ethiopia and the authorities are set to announce a number of positive drugs tests among the country’s top athletes in the coming weeks.

Nine Ethiopian runners, five of them “top athletes,” are under investigation for doping, the general secretary of the country’s anti-doping agency said Monday, raising fears of another damaging scandal for track and field in the run-up to the Rio Olympics.
