The organizers of the Tropicale Amissa Bongo – whose 12th edition was held last February and March – unveiled the names of the 15 riders nominated for the title of best African cyclist of the year 2017.
Awarded since its creation in 2012, this trophy rewards ” the rider who, through his results on the continent and on the rest of the planet, has contributed the most to make African cycling known”.

The 2016 African Continental Championship winner and UCI Africa Tour ranking leader for 2016, the Eritrean rider Tesfom Okubamariam has been selected Africa’s Best Cyclist of the Year 2016.
A jury chaired by Bernard Hinault, the five-time Tour de France winner, including sports directors, coaches, African and European journalists and riders such as Chris Froome, three times-Tour de France winner, had nominated 20 riders for the title.

Accordingly, Eritrea has the largest nomination with 4 riders namely
Natnael Berhane, Mekseb Debesay, Merhawi Kudus and Daniel Teklehaimanot.
South Africa, Rwanda, Algeria and Morocco are nominated each with 3 riders, while Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Ethiopia and Tunisia each by one rider.
