Wang Yi Holds Talks with Minister of Foreign Affairs Osman Saleh of Eritrea

BY CHINA FOREIGN MINISTRY

On April 18, 2017, Foreign Minister Wang Yi met in Beijing with Minister of Foreign Affairs Osman Saleh of Eritrea, who was on an official visit to China.

Wang Yi said that China-Eritrea relations maintain a sustained and healthy development with mutual understanding and support on issues concerning respective core interests and major concerns. Both countries have forged a profound friendship.

China is willing to, together with Eritrea, take the implementation of outcomes of the Johannesburg Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) as an opportunity to intensify political exchanges, strengthen cooperation and planning, give priority to mutually beneficial cooperation in such fields as mining, agriculture, fishery, tourism, poverty reduction, infrastructure construction and human resource development, expand people-to-people and cultural exchanges, and intensify coordination in international and regional affairs, so as to elevate China-Eritrea relations to new highs.

Osman Saleh said that Eritrea thanked China for its long-term support and assistance. Both countries share high-level political mutual trust and huge potential in mutually beneficial cooperation in economy and trade.

The Eritrean side hopes to, together with China, strengthen friendly cooperation in various fields, gain more benefits from the implementation of outcomes of the FOCAC Johannesburg Summit, and constantly elevate the level of bilateral cooperation.

The country expects China to play a greater role in African and global affairs, and work with Eritrea to jointly safeguard the interests of the two countries as well as developing countries.

Both sides also exchanged in-depth views on international and regional issues of common concern.

Of all the oppressive governing system they have, one thing I like about the Chinese is they change presidents every ten years. And that is the one thing of China Ato Isaias closes his ears with his two hands on.

FM Osman and Yemane are doing the heavy weight diplomatic works lately on behalf of PIA except to those regions of his influence such as the Gulf and Arab regions. By doing so, he effectively shielded himself and Eritrea from unwarranted spine of stories from the mainstream media and the usual arm-chair regional experts.

Osman and Yemane have been in Russia, Finland, Crimea, Egypt, Uganda, Kenya, and so and so on and no one pays attention on the significance of their diplomatic move although they are doing so on PIA’s behalf. Can you imagine how the story to this date would be like if PIA was the one who visited Crimea or Russia? So by giving full authorization for Osman and Yemane, he managed to effectively address the diplomatic engagement with those big wigs with out attracting unnecessary attentions.

PIA from the comfort of his office crafts policy for external relations, regional politics and security directives, while Yemane and Osman taking care of its implementation internationally and regionally. Domestically though, he spends quality time on the implementation of development projects, following up security and military matters on a daily basis. This is how things should have to go for a time being. And we are seeing results by the way. GO PIA. GO OSMAN and YEMANE. VIVA

    • Gudus

That is mainly the job of foreign minister, diplomats et al nothing new there, the majority of countries do the same thing, so stop your amateur speculations

      • One Observer

You completely missed his point; possibly on purpose.

Wedi Amete is saying that the GoE has been a step ahead on diplomatic front, outmaneuvering your bosses in Mekele and their mentors at the State Dep.

        • Bereket

What outmaneuvering are you thinking of?

Sanctions remain places on Eritrea. Ethiopia remains on Eritrean land. Yet “we are seeing results”. All talk no action. Eritreans remain on indefinite national service and continue to flee the country.

          • Wedi Amete

You have been beaten by your own game lately. Look around, you are under the state of emergency. Who do you think put you in that state? Look around and see what is happening in Gondar Amhara and Oromo land, the growing number of armed groups and rebellion everywhere? Who do you think slap your Tigray region with a no-war, no-peace situation that no investor dare to invest and as a result Tigray youth end up migrating to Yemen, Somaliland and Libya for lack of jobs and opportunities. Who do you think brought the Arabs on the strategic port of Assab and sealed once and for all your evil plan in that direction. Look around. Who do you think bringing your nightmare Egypt’s navy and aircraft carrier on the Red Sea under the guise of a fishing investment. Look around and tell me who is checkmating your tribal junta at every juncture. That’s right. He is the man, the lion of Nakfa and the founding father of Eritrea.

As for sanctions, I thought you are a grown up ass man who already figured it out. Eritrea is not a landlocked Ethiopia. Weapon can arrive at anytime from any friendly gulf or North Africa states without anyone noticing it. You don’t get that do you? If you think the sanction were working, Eritrea couldn’t able to fly its fighter jets for lack of spare parts, starting from tires, for the last seven years and counting. No they are still kicking with out a glitch. For your own information, that is the main reason the UN monitoring group insists on visiting Eritrea, to check in the serial numbers of the spares and to determine from where and how they come from. They call it looking for evidence as if the sanctions were passed with out any evidence. And using that evidence as an excuse to legitimize and prolong the illegal sanction they have been putting up on us. No way. It can not happen. Let the sanction stay. Who cares. We get what we wanted anyway.

So my Tigraway neighbour, do not get your hopes up with the sanction. Even your puppet prime minister admits his no-war no-peace policy hurts Tigray more than Eritrea. Tigrayans are openly complaining this days why they have shoulder the burden of the entire Ethiopian problem with Eritrea and are asking tough questions for the puppet to figure something else as they can not continue like this anymore. But what else he can do at this time? Zilch. The master strategist from Asmara have already stored plan E and plan F just in case and everything is going according to his wishes. So you starved thug, worry for your poor people and starved people. PIA have shown you his balls. He doesn’t give a hoot for sanctions or else. He already took the country out of recession and now putting you on that scale instead. Let’s see how far you can get with that.

            So long

          • Phi Lax
          • Wedi Amete, you must be a very resourceful man. I thank you for sharing your wisdom. Like what you have described, I have heard last week on VOA Tigrinya program how much the people of Tigray are suffering due to the failed no-peace-no-war policy. Some took their complaints straight to the Prime Minister, urging him to find a lasting solution to the deteriorated security and development situation in Tigray due to insecurity and uncertain situation with Eritrea. They said Tigray is paying a heavy price on behalf of Ethiopia and warned the situation can not sustain any longer. Here below is that special program:

Clearly, Eritrea has managed to break the ‘diplomatic isolation’ that was carefully perpetrated by the TPLF and its sponsors in US, UK and France. I am sure you have seen the diplomatic cables leaked by wiki… details of various schemes ranging from directing western banks and airlines to stop operating in Ertra, threatening to Eritrean leaders, placing sanctions based on bogus claims, to orchestrating a blatant propaganda campaign to tarnish Eritrean security and drive out its youth.

Obviously, it has not been easy for the GoE to break the isolation…. but now I feel no more isolated. JUST ADMIT IT :-))) Sooner or later the sanction will be gone too.

If you need an analytical approach to this story… read this excellent piece below.

  • Ethiopia: Diplomatic Shuttle Follows News that Eritrea Grants Egypt Military Base

(ESAT NEWS) – Ethiopia’s Foreign Minister is in Cairo following news that arch foe Eritrea has given the nod to Egypt to establish a military base.

Details of the talks are scanty but Workeneh Gebeyehu has met his Egyptian counterpart and also president Abdel Fettah Al Sisi in Cairo.

A high level Egyptian delegation was in Asmara, Eritrea last week amid unconfirmed reports that Eritrea has granted Egypt to establish a military base.

Egypt will be the third Arab country in the region to have a military base in Eritrea.

Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates have already leased the port city of Assab for military base.

News of the new developments has led Ethiopian officials to scramble for diplomatic solutions, as any cooperation between Egypt and Eritrea is seen as a threat by the Ethiopian side.

Ethiopian officials say the move by Egypt would undermine and sabotage the construction of the mega hydro electric dam along the Nile, which Egypt says would affect its share of the water, according to reports.

Ethiopia has been accusing Eritrea and Egypt of harboring “anti Ethiopian forces,” which the two countries categorically deny.

China always supported Ethiopia during the border war. They supplied Ethiopia with numerous military communication equipment. They have massive investments in Ethiopian infrastructure and worst of all, they did not veto the illegal sanctions against Eritrea. I hope our minister reminds them of their unfair behavior. China is not as bad as the US/UK, but they are simple not to be trusted.

    • Kaleab B

?? The Chinese has had a strict “non-interference policy” in the affairs of other countries. Therefore, no one had expected China to interfere in our fight with TPLF Ethiopia. Yeah, they sold weapons to both countries. They have investments in both countries too.

Lately though China has been feeling pressure to protect its investments and facilities in Africa. Their actions in South Sudan last year was interesting to say the least, where they flexed their muscle and prevented the US from both bringing down President Salva Kiir and putting sanction on his government. Huge move for the Chinese part… and surprising moves for everyone else.

Eritrea just needs to remain on their good side, thats all.

Topic is about Eritrea and China. Please Eritreans talk or write about your country otherwise Ethiopia is for Ethiopians only stay out of our affairs. As one of old Eritrean businessman who said “We taught Ethiopians how to dine with forks”. Ethiopia hosts the highest number of refugees in Africa, a large number of whom are fleeing neighbouring Eritrea.
