By TesfaNews,

Ladies and Gentlemen, here is a winner of your vote for Africa’s Best Sportsman of the Year, the dual champion of African road cycling, champion of Presidential Tour of Turkey, the born rider, the new prodigy of world cycling, the one and only Eritrean Natnael Berhane.

According to the results released by the Africa Top Sports Award 2013 organizers, Natnael claimed this victory by sweeping the available 4,371 (44%) of the votes against  2,847 votes (29%) by Ivorian favorite Yaya Touré and 637 (7%) by Didier Drogba.

Voted best African cyclist in 2012, Natnael Berhane was in top form in 2013 and hopes to confirm this year too.

Here is what he has posted on his Facebook page after learning the decision:

My friends, I’ve no words to express the great happiness I’m feeling in this moment. I’m really impressed with all your support. So this prize is also yours. I also thank all of you for my birthday messages. Thanks cheers sssssss.

Daniel Teklehaymanot, another Eritrean cycling king, was voted same way Best African Sportsman in 2012.

Eritrean government officials are also quick to congratulate the young talent for his achievement. The Eritrean Ambassador to UK and Ireland, Tesfamicael Gerahtu, wrote the following on his Facebook profile:

Viva Natnael! This is a remarkable achievement to you and the Eritrean cycling Team. It is a strong indication of the rapid progress of cycling in Eritrea and the accumulated successes that you have earned in African and global competitions. Keep it up and the whole nation is rallying behind you and the entire Eritrean Cycling Team! Congratulations also to all patriotic Eritreans and friends of Eritrea, Natnael and the Eritrean Cycling Team who took the strong position of voting Natnael as the greatest cyclist for 2013. ጻዕርና ይቀጽል፡ ይዕወት’ውን ናይ ግድን። Viva Natnael!

Eritrea is the unchallenged Cycling champion of Africa for four years in a row and its young and fearsome generation of cyclists continues to make waves throughout Africa and soon to the rest of the world.

  1. Well done Natu. You deserve it and at the saame time congra to all Eritreans…yesterday was Zerit, then Danu and now Natu…let's do it again.

  2. natnael you r the best eritreans we proud of you keep up the good work soon or later we will have hundreds like you, jigna wedi eritrea!!!!

  3. Not fair. Come on now…I am sure all the votes came from Eritreans ONLY. There are more qualified sportsmen/women that deserve the title. Eritreans probably have the highest access to the internet than most Africans as your number outside Africa is the largest than any African country.

    1. They are champions for four years in a row ,how many more ass wop do you need to recognize a winner…..might be 30 right? keep counting. By the way it is not the internet access, it is the collective true Eritrean spirit to praise a hero among us . Unlike you, jealousy ridden people.

  4. Africans are not 4,371. Africans number more than one Billion. It seems that half of these 4,371 who participated in voting are members of the Eritrean Diaspora Community. No doubt though that Eritrea has good cyclists. In fact, the only good thing coming out of Eritrea is its cyclists.

      1. First, Natnael, yohanna. This is very significant achievement. Congratulations. The Eritrean population in the USA is not big deal quantitatively. Yes, is the best organized. But, when it comes in terms of number, do you know how many Nigerians or Ghanians there are? Millions! Do they have interest in voting? The African Federation for Cicling, that is what grying to prove. Followers by attracting voters.

        Good job Eritrean Sport Federation.

      2. No jealousy at all. It is true that Eritrea produces high performing cyclists but when it comes to this so called "sportsman" of the year, we need a different way of voting mechanism. There are top cyclists from RSA, Algeria and Morroco but they did not get the votes due to the number of ppl having no access to the internet in their home countries. thx

        1. To: Gebrat,

          Are you serious??

          1) If you have an issue with the voting mechanism, go address it at the appropriate venue. Don't come here and cry "not fair"!

          2) The "top cyclists from RSA, Algeria and Morocco…" you mentioned, how come they didn't beat the Eritrean teams for the last for years? In actual tournaments!!

          3) Do you have any evidence to substantiate your claim that the Eritrean diaspora outnumbers all other African countries' diaspora? You know it's total BS, right?

Now for your own sanity, please go back to tigraionline and enjoy your fantasy world. Too much time at a website like this and too much exposure to realty can cause serious damage to your health! I understand you guys are more used to, and more comfortable with, lies and fabrications.

          1. The Problem is not with the voting mechanism or not because Eritreans have more internet access. But because no one else in Africa give a rat ass about an award from a hardly known website. But the Eritrean diaspora including this website was campaigning for that voting. have you heard about that vote in any other African country social group or website? or have you heard the "news" anywhere else apart from Tesfanews?

But I am not taking away anything with this young man who had a great year and who seems to have a big future.

          2. Tedeo,

Thanks for acknowledging the young athlete's great success.

As to your claim, "…no one else in Africa gives a rat ass [sic] about an award…", do you realize that 56% of the votes came from non-Eritreans? Granted, the total number of votes was only about 10,000, but that refutes your claim that "…no one else in Africa…".

If your assertions are true, I wonder if the reason the Eritreans have claimed the African cycling championships year after year since 2009 is that no one else gives a rat's ass about these tournaments!

You have your great athletes, and we have ours. Put the jealousy aside, and let's sport them all. Afterall, we're all brothers – Africans!

          3. Etr ,
if you read the news on the website , the ethiopian Tirunesh Dibaba is also the best sport woman of the year 2013. But no one in Ethiopia or abroad mentioned that. I am not saying she is not a good athlete, yes she is. But there are thousands of such websites who give award based on voting.
If you don't believe me, google it and show me a single sport news that mentioned this award.
As I said it in the first comment this is not to take away anything from a good athlete who has a big potential. and I didn't say no one gives a rat ass to cycling championship(albeit it is in early stage in Africa, but its a prestigious sport). But no one(literally and figuratively) gives a rat's ass to an ward by unheard website. It just reminded one incident. A few years back pople were voting who is the best footballer of the year. The organizer were FIFA. every country has two representative one player and the coach. many people were voting for either Ronaldo or Messi Albania representative voted for Albanian player which I hardly remember his name .

          4. Personally I don't vote to an athlete just because he is from my country. That doesn't give sense. I give my vote to an athlete which i believe is better.
You use the jealousy card to anyone who doesn't agree with you or you are sure I am jealous?

          5. Again, thanks for acknowledging the athletes' achievements – both Berhane and Dibaba. By the way, I admire her a lot! But the fact that Ethiopians didn't mention her being named best woman athlete of the year is a shame. You should be embarrassed about it!

It doesn't matter how big or prestigious the venue is, we cheer, celebrate, and support our athletes. And we do it proudly. If you have a problem with us doing it, on our own website, I say to you, no one gives a rat's ass what you think (to use your own words).

    1. Its not only the votes that counted you Jealousy ridden foe. Its journalists and coaches and achievements that counted towards the over all designation .

  5. Natu! our continent's champ that's great. This is the sign of tomorrow's Eritrean world champ of cycling.
Great hope to our blessed land. Eru keep going that way.

  6. I doff my hat off for you, sir! What a remarkable man. You came up against household names, yet again you prevailed for the umpteenth times. Is anyone batting an eyelid? are they not the sort of victories n accolades we have to expect from natu and et al. Congratulations once again, well done!

  7. Congra Natu and well done to all those who campaigned and voted. He was against some formidable and world famous sport men and he is done it.

Eritreans winning it for two consecutive years. This sheer brilliance.

  8. Viva Natu !
A well deserved title to our youngest hero ! Lets this be the start not the end … we hope to see more of your victories this year as well.
    Congrats Brother !

  9. NOW THAT I THINK ABOUT IT MR. NATNAIEL IS NOT ONLY THE PRIDE OF GREAT-ERITREA, BUT HE IS ALSO A PRIDE FOR THE WHOLE OF CONTINENT OF AFRICA. SO VIVA WEDI EREY. AND I ALSO WANT TO CONGRATULATE HIS COACHES AND HIS TEAM MATES AS WELL AND ALSO THE GREAT-ERITREAN PEOPLE INSIDE THE COUNTRY AND OUTSIDE. THESE GUYS DID NOT ONLY BECOME FAMOUS BUT AT THE SAME TIME MADE THEIR MOTHER AND FATHERS AND THEIR WHOLE COUNTRY MEN/WOMEN PROUD AND I MIGHT ADD MADE THE WHOLE AFRICAN CONTINENT LEAVE IT'S MARK ON THE CYCLING FEDERATION WHICH WAS ALWAYS KNOWN BY THE WHITE EUROPEANS. SO FOR ONCE LET AS ALL AFRICANS ENJOY THIS MOMENT AND BE HAPPY FOR ANOTHER AFRICAN LEAVING. GOD BLESS YOU TESFANEWS FOR BRINGING THIS OUTSTANDING NEWS.

  10. To Gebrat and Jacob
We eritreans are good at cycling. We produce the best cyclist in africa. How about you agames? You are nothing. You produce nothing but beggars. You cannot compare Moroccans and south africans to eritreans. We are champions of africa and we deserve to be winners.
    VIVA ERITREA AND ERITREANS!!
    DIE ALL AGAME LOSERS!!

  11. Well done Natu, we are proud of you. Not only as Eritreans. You are also best African cyclist in the world stage too!! Keep up a good work!

  12. Natnu, you made my year, I realy have no words for the huge sucess you made for you, your people & your country Eritrea. Other young Eritreans will fellow your steps on the world stage. Proud of you!! Keep it up.

  13. First i would like to congratulate to Natial and to be honest I'm Eritrean I'm happy natu won it but to compare him with like yaya, drogba is unbelievable those guys are more famous than him well deserved to win every thing

  14. Eritrean government officials are also quick to congratulate the young talent for his achievement. The Eritrean Ambassador to UK and Ireland, Tesfamicael Gerahtu, wrote the following on his Facebook profile: LOL…ARE THESE THE SAME OFFICIAL WHO DENY EVERY THING THAT IS BAD, LIKE THE LAMPADUSA INCIDENT, THE MASS YOUTH FLIGHT, THE ISRAEL REFUGEE CRISIS…but this moron has the nerve to address this as a victory…shame on ALL of us:( sad ass society we became!!!!
