Kenya’s Foreign Minister Lobbying Eritrea’s Support for AU Chair Position

The race for the African Union’s top job is heating up. Senegal and Kenya kicks off intense lobbying to secure Eritrea’s vote.

Amina Mohamed for African Union Commission
As she runs for the Chairperson’s position at the African Union Commission, Dr. Amina Mohamed of Kenya arrived in Asmara to lobby Eritrea’s crucial vote.

By Shabait,

President Isaias Afwerki today received and held talks with Dr. Amina Mohamed, Kenya’s Foreign Minister and candidate for the Chairperson of the African Union Commission.

The President underlined the need for the enhancement and revitalization of the African Union to ensure that the African continent holds its rightful place in the world.

President Isaias further emphasized the urgency for both the African Union and the regional organizations (RECs) such as IGAD to get their acts together to advance the widely shared objectives of the continent’s economic integration.

President Isaias and Dr. Amina Mohamed also discussed in detail the status of the bilateral ties between the two sisterly countries. In this regard, President Isaias underscored the need for Kenya to play its due role in the Horn of Africa.

  1. It looks like she brought a nice gift – a sculpture of a hippo. But how does she plan to stand up for Africa and the Horn if she becomes a chairwoman? Her country, Kenya, is still colonized by the West. What role does she plan to play in making sure the EEBC decision, to which the AU was a signatory, is demarcated on the ground and the prostitute TPLF stops occupying sovereign Eritrean territory? These are the questions she needs to be asked.

          1. Brother kaleab, you never know our stupid detractors the likes of Hassina, Awate and Agamigna and the nefarious outsiders have run out of issues to antagonise our humble government now they might entertain this kind of stupid demand after all they are known to demand unthinkable.

    1. We’ll return the favor with a sculpture of a Camel. It has the potential to outlast any heavy hippo in any long journey. It won’t be tired, exhausted and requesting frequent water breaks. But we Eritreans are humble enough to accept such wonderful gift. 🙂

  2. Bilateral relations between Kenya and Eritrea have improved under President Uhuru Kenyatta compared to those frosty years under his predecessor.

Please let’s forgive but not forget how Kenya, at the behest of TPLF, kidnapped and handed-over the two Eritrean journalists in 2006 from Nairobi. Journalists Tesfalidet Kidane Tesfazghi and Saleh Idris Gama, are still languishing in the dungeons of the criminal TPLF because of Kenya.

Again let’s forgive but not forget how Kenya join hands with TPLF and campaigned hard against Eritrea, be it within IGAD or regionally. The one that was so obvious was when Kenya fabricated the story about the three plane-loads of weapons landed in Baidoa from Eritrea to Somalia terror group. That goes beyond siding with Ethiopia to punish Eritrea. Although the UN later dismissed the lousy fabricated story, Kenya never apologized for it or any.

Now that they have got a new government and so far it is ok with Eritrea, we can’t be wrong to guess Kenya favoring Ethiopia over Eritrea for the obvious reasons. So if our vote is so crucial, it should go where it can serve our interest the most.

    1. I think it about time we forget what other countries do or don’t. time and again every country is after Eritrea. don’t you remember what the Kenyans said in 2011?
“the Government of Kenya has accused Eritrea of delivering, in Baidoa, Somalia, three plane loads of arms to Al Shabaab.”
this was said to hurt Eritrea and in support of weyane. my point is let’s forget about the slaves of the west, the Africans do or don’t. They are not free themselves how are they going to help Eritrea with anything?

      1. glad to see you here, Nitricc. i always like to read your answerer’s end coments
at those sore losers web site.
good to your ward i guess you left them.

    2. ‘Please let’s forgive but not forget how Kenya, at the behest of TPLF, kidnapped and handed-over the two Eritrean journalists in 2006 from Nairobi. Journalists Tesfalidet Kidane Tesfazghi and Saleh Idris Gama, are still languishing in the dungeons of the criminal TPLF because of Kenya.’
Why the indifference regarding the other Eritrean journalists that are languishing in the dungeons of the Eritrean regime? What a double standard for you to speak about Tesfalidet and Saleh but not about the numerous others imprisoned for many years. Eritrean journalists like Seyoum Tsehaye, Medhanie Haile, Fessahaye Yohannes, Dawit Habtemichael and many, many others. You may have deliberately ignored their situation, but rest assured many Eritreans at home and abroad have not.

      1. You must be new to this forum to learn my stand on those imprisoned journalists. Whatever crime they commit to warrant their detention, I still don’t appreciate the “indefinite” nature of their detentions with out due legal process.

      2. “Daniel,” even if TN’s stand were otherwise, I am not sure if you’re following the topic, but the conversation here is in regards to Kenya-Eritrea relationship. In that regard, one need not discuss other issues that have no relevance. Othewise, I am going to hold you accountable for Julian Assange is still holed up in an Ecuadorian embassy, and you didn’t mention it in your comment?!?! Did you “deliberately ignore his situation? Get a life dude!

  3. Kenya is one of the most corrupt country of the world..Hope she has will to be a good example of change of Her country first and then in a broad view, our region and Africa in general.

    Nice Rhino gift.

But, what is the point, because Kenya is a waste of time. Even the pet in the south is playing Kenya like a cheap fiddle. And what guarantee do we have.. this will not get used against us. Because Kenya wasn’t a friend of Eritrea. I hope GoE not to waste its vote on this useless country.

    1. Excuse me but could you elaborate on what you meant by “vote” is there any type of global election that I am not aware of? Please don’t ignore me like last time.

      1. ኣሌክ - Alec you · Edit

Voting for the support of Kenya’s foreign minister for AU Chair Position. Read the article and u will understand what I meant when I said vote. By the way man, voting is no just for elections. The Kenyan foreign minister.. wants Eritrea to support her by casting its vote. And that is why I said, Kenya is not worth it. Read the article brother.????????

And sorry for not replying, I use gmail and it’s a lot of reply and comments in my Mail box. That is why, but I will reply next time. Again sorry.

    1. Sorry but Senegal can not be trusted at all. Have you studied their votes at the SC? Their system of governance is not predictable, if not outright failure. Corruption is in the open. Let must just say that I know a lot about Senegal and I wouldn’t do any deal with them unless I know I have something they want. Besides, Eritrea does not have tangible relationship with Senegal; but it does with Kenya.

    2. My vote goes for Senegal.
Kenya has a history against Eritrea. It is a government that can be bought by Woyane.
At lease Senegal is clean slate and has a position at the security council, which matters a lot as we expect more accusations and provocations in the next two years from Ethiopia as a member of the security council.

    3. I agree for this reason, and for the fact that they haven’t harmed us in the past, and are less likely to be duped if we help them out with our vote. On the other hand, Kenya will always be Ethiopia’s lap dog, and unlikely to be just when it comes to Eri-Ethio affairs.

  5. I think, Eritrea will vote to the candidate seeking a seat for the Chairperson of the African Union Commission on his/her political view , his/her contribution to his/her people and country, his/her conviction to solve problems and the decisions he/she made while holding government positions. At the end their personal resume and their country’s political stand before and after the independence will be checked attentively.

    1. KENYA IS PARALIZED COUNTRY BY CORRUPTION, INJUSTIC and the powerful and those who accumulated money by corrupt practices enjoy life and sleep with who ever is their match. Kenya has not solved the problems in the country where there is big gap between the poor and the rich. How is this woman born into the corrupt system of kenya be good for others when she has not done anything to her own poor , marjnalized Kenyans. How do you expect her to do good for horn or Africa. she never visited Eritrea before, now she wanted the vote suddenly jumped on the plane to Asmara. this what such people, power hungry guys do.
give her a nice farewell and pack her home. do not expect anything from Africans, they have not solved their own problems at home. cannot be of fairness and justice when they accept poverty, mariginalization normal in their own countries.

      1. I do not think this woman was free from joining hands with woyane when they put sanction on Eritrea . Kenya is a member IGAD, that all the members sided with woyane to pass the sanction against Eritrea and as a result Suzan rice called it African intiative. Ha, Ha , what did kenya did that time. What did this woman said that time.
but it is good to forgive them because we have emereged the winners as there was truth on our side. It is time for them now to be friends with us and seek our support. That is fair for the winner to take it all. We now can help them to succeed not the way they did it to kill us.
forgive them!, support them magnanimousely. The winner takes it all. mag

This morning I had the pleasure of meeting with the Commissioner for Social Affairs of the African Union Commission, Dr. Sidiki Kaloko. Eritrea features as one of the best performers in the continent in a range of social indicators, be it controlling and eradicating communicable diseases, decreasing maternal and child mortality, ensuring near-universal immunization…and so on.

But in today’s meeting, I learned that Eritrea is one of the 6 top performing countries in the continent in reducing early child marriage! Kudos to the policy makers, the leadership and members of the National Union of Eritrean Women, members of the committees to end child marriage across the country, village elders, religious leaders and the population at large.

This is one big step forward in ensuring that every girl child gets the opportunity to realize her full potential.

  8. She is in Eritrea to get support for the AU job. But Kenya was one of the countries accused Eritrea with out any prove. The government of Eritrea shouldn’t put his support for Kenya to have this job. Senegal do the same thing. When they need political support the come with out even thinking what they have done in the past. Eritrea shouldn’t give its political power to either of these countries. rhino as a gift is not going change our political stand, Eritrean leadership are greedy as Kenyan or Senegal leaders.

    1. Who said “There is no permanent enemy/ friend; only permanent interest?” The GoE will do what’s best for Eritrea (short or long term).

      1. Amina is good friend of Amb Russom, he lobbied for her visit to Asmara, and hoping to turn the table of Africa into Eritrean interest. What is wrong with trying than talking and doing nothing like some of us with not deep in the clock around the horn.

        1. Amina also knows PIAs interest in wood works and wood crafts, maybe we know he is a crafts man himself too! It might be the time for the crafts men to the new phase to scramble modern Africa again! Which way where and how only time will be the correct answer.

          1. AU nor IGAD has no strong teeth to bite meat from the bone, but the Africa’s game of politics big or small will never stop and will go on until we are tired.

        2. I don’t know where did you get that Amb. Russom lobbied her to come to Asmara, WAero, unless you have a classified information she is in Asmara by her own volition seeking the so called highest Post.
Eritrea as a small country has large number of votes thus they have to court smaller courtiers, remember Ban-Ki Moon visited as well as Coffee Unud/Anan did the same thing……….

  12. She sound okay at least brought a pledge ,Eritrea is a great example for the entire Africa leaders .they are coming slowly bot surly .The good news is TPLF is vanishing little by little .The horn of Africa is going to be a peaceful Africa hopefully. I can see light on the tonal .Just we have to give her chance so far so good.
