Eritrean News Agency Requests Al-Jazeera to Rectify its Biased Stance

Al Jazeera’s skewed and biased reporting on Eritrea need to be rectified
Losing credibility everywhere. We had repeatedly urged Al Jazeera to refrain from biased and skewed reporting on Eritrea. But our request continues to be ignored.

BY PAULOS NETABAY

Dear Mr. Al Anstey, CEO of Al Jazeera Media Network

,

I refer to a derogatory article: “Eritrea: Anecdotes of indefinite anarchy” that was posted in Al Jazeera’s  website on Thursday (July 6) last week.  The article in question essentially dwells on a barrage of vitriol against Eritrea by a notorious author who routinely engages in a smear campaign against the country.

I will not waste your time here to respond to his unfounded and outrageous narrative.  But what we find baffling is Al-Jazeera’s evident preference to accommodate and disseminate innuendos and lies by obscure authors of dubious credibility and/or who harbor sinister agendas against Eritrea.

We had repeatedly urged Al Jazeera, on various occasions in the past, to refrain from this biased stance.  But for reasons we fail to understand, this legitimate request continues to be ignored.

Similarly, our repeated requests for the right of response and to be given equal space to rectify malicious propaganda against Eritrea seem to fall on deaf ears.

In this particular case, Al Jazeera has put a disclaimer pointing out that “the views expressed in this article are the author’s own and do not necessarily reflect Al Jazeera’s editorial policy”.  The disclaimer cannot, however, conceal Al Jazeera’s transparent selection bias which is indeed amplified by the links to several, negative, stories it highlights in the same article.

From our perspective, Al Jazeera’s insistence on this skewed approach will only undermine and corrode its professed claims of “neutrality, objectivity and professionalism” in its coverage of international news and events.

Sincerely,

Paulos Netabay
Director,
Eritrean News Agency

I am not a supporter of the current government but for first time Issayas picked the right / stronger side in a conflict. It had been better to be neutral but for small country like Eritrea it is not possible. What worries me is the decision making in Eritrea where all decisions are made by one man in absence of parliament / institutuons where different views could be discussed. For instance why is the presence of UAE base a secret for Eritrean people? No one can argue that one man in power for more than 50 years (pre/post independence) is healthy for any country development.

      • Snake

I agree Issaya is not good for Eritrea maybe it’s something to do with his age, they say when people get older they lose their brain and act like kids, just like Mugabe of Zimbabwe he’s way to ild he’s like 91, last time when he attended African Union he messed his words and fall asleep the entire time.

Eritrea needs an educated person who will make Eritrea great again.

        Senai
If you are an Eritrean you ought to understand few things, specially matters which deals with national security is seldom for public discussion even some times the parliament ( even if we had a parliament) need not know the details but get informed about the existence of the UAE in Assab. As to how the government of Eritrea get to the decision is off record brother. However, if you are one of our southern neighbors you get already the right answer by Eritrea. As the midget once anticipated Assab has become a water hole for the UAE camels the only difference is the camels, they do fly, they are not exactly as you used to see in the Arabian Peninsula.

  • Ethiopian Defense Minister Meets his Qatari Counterpart

(Gulf Times) – Ethiopia’s Minister of Defense, Siraj Fegessa. yesterday met Qatari’s Minister of State for Defense Affairs, Dr Khalid bin Mohamed Al Attiyah.

Talks dealt with issues of mutual interest as well as cooperation between the two “friendly countries” and means of enhancing them.

  • Putting such responses public by the Eritrean government using Paulos Netabay as a front, for the second time since the start of the Saudi-led crisis with Qatar (or to be precise, since Eritrea sided with the Saudi camp), it tells something is in the offing behind the curtain. As Qatar continue to send signals directed at Eritrea using Al Jazeera as its soft power, Eritrea is sending back its own message directed at Qatar by warning Al Jazeera.

The above letter simply warn “Qatar to stop misrepresenting and demonizing Eritrea”… else will risk losing Eritrea altogether … (or something in between …)

I’m make this assertion today for the second time [knowing full I could be somehow wrong], and if we take this as a sign of deteriorating in relation, it may possibly lead either to the total ban of Al Jazeera in Eritrea, or the downgrading of diplomatic relation with Qatar [if not cutting ties completely].

I want TN readers to think out of the box and start to read between the lines of the above letter. In other words, the above message is not between Ministry of Information and Al Jazeera but between Eritrean government and the State of Qatar.

  • Kalid

You are so funny TN, you don’t even know your limit. Qatar doesn’t care about banana ‘state’ like Eritrea. If we want we can buy you in no time, and your poverty stricken people would be joyful servant of our people. However, you are too primitive & filthy to do that

    • Alem Mehari

      Mr “kALID”
I don´t think you are worth out time to since individuals with apathetic attitude to their fellow human beings, are by nature not prone to se the value of humans blinded by material being, but since you invite to dance we can comfort you as per your wishes . True we may be poor materially just like your grandfathers who were a nomads had not even a can clean water to drink and no where to live, but all of a sudden you got bingo, yes it is also true you have been able to build your country in no time at least materially, however, we know it how.

Please refer in google the latest report how you treated those poor souls who are building the stadium arenas for the coming great sport events in Doha, did I need to be very brutal you may hear it if you need, just like you got your luck Eritrea is endowed too with immense wealth in its soil, but we don´t have to be servant to non to exploit our colossal wealth. UAE: Al-Jazeera Has Gone Beyond Incitement to Hostility, Violence

      https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/6fd41426069344e064dae1613f88bb3eebf5b4ea648f909a1612f20a343c1129.jpg

(ASHARQ AL-AWSAT, 13 July 2017) – UAE has accused al-Jazeera TV station of spreading sectarianism and promoting violence and anti-Semitism in response to UN’s refusal to call on the Arab countries that have boycotted Doha to shut the channel.

UAE Dr. Anwar Gargash, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, sent a letter to UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Zeid Ra’ad al-Hussein, addressing his country’s concerns that the Doha-based network promotes extremist ideologies.

The letter highlighted how al-Jazeera has promoted anti-Semitic violence by broadcasting sermons by spiritual leader of Muslim Brotherhood Yusuf al-Qaradawi in which he praised Hitler, described the Holocaust as “divine punishment” and called on Allah to “take this oppressive, Jewish, Zionist band of people and kill them, down to the very last one.”

“While the protection of the right of freedom of expression is of fundamental importance, this protection is not absolute, and restrictions on the right are permitted under the international law to protect national security and public order,” said Gargash in his letter sent.

“Freedom of expression cannot be used to justify and shield the promotion of extremist narratives,” the letter notes.

The minister recalled UN Security Council Resolution 1624 (2005), a historic resolution that focused on messages that often precede acts of terrorism and called on states to prohibit and prevent incitement to commit terrorist acts.

The letter referred to the Joint Declaration on Freedom of Expression and Countering Violent Extremism adopted by the special rapporteur and several regional and human rights bodies.

It recognized that states may restrict reporting that is intended to incite imminent violence, and there is a direct and immediate connection between the reporting and the likelihood or occurrence of such violence.

In this regard, the letter makes clear that al-Jazeera’s reporting has repeatedly crossed the threshold of incitement to hostility, violence and discrimination, and lists several examples of such content.

For instance, on February 18, 2008, following the re-publication of a blasphemous cartoon, al-Jazeera TV broadcast a speech by the spokesman of the Salah al-Din brigades in Gaza that called on Muslims to “burn down the offices of the newspapers that affronted our Prophet, and bomb them so that body parts go flying.”

Also included in the letter are numerous examples of the ongoing editorial support for terrorist groups and on-air promotion of sectarianism by the Qatari channel’s journalists.

The letter mentioned that, over the years, “the Qatari-owned and controlled al-Jazeera Arabic has provided a platform to Osama bin Laden (al-Qaeda), Abu Mohammed al-Jolani (al-Nusra), Khaled Mashal (Hamas), Mohammed Deif (Hamas), Anwar al-Awlaki (al-Qaeda), Hassan Nasrallah (Hezbollah), Ramadan Shallah (Palestinian Islamic Jihad), and Abdel Hakim Belhadj (Libyan ISIS Group), among others.

The letter explained that these interviews gave terrorist groups opportunities to threaten, recruit and incite, without challenge or restraint.

The minister reiterated that the UAE’s strong objections to al-Jazeera are not a matter of disagreement on its editorial standpoints but are a direct and necessary response to its persistent and dangerous incitement to hostility, violence and discrimination.

In light of the alarming examples quoted in the letter, these objections are legitimate, well founded and reasonable.

The letter concluded with an invitation to the High Commissioner to discuss additional cases of al-Jazeera’s promotion of extremist ideologies and ways to protect the right of freedom of expression in the face of such egregious abuses.

Whether you from Qatar (which I doubt) or from Quenty Land, my response is good enough to either of you. If you’re Ugumesh, my outdated leftover food will soon be shipped to your crib, try to stay alive:-)

      If you’re Qatari,
I’m glad there are people like you around your tiny Gas Island who are now telling your “Emir” to be a servant of the GCC. It is funny that you think Qatar is a country, a “country ” that can’t feed itself for a week, thank Allah for Iran and Turkey. What you don’t know is your kind won’t survive a single day, if (1) there was no Gas, (2) and no western brain to drill your gas from your desert island, and (3) there were no Pakistanis cooking your daily meal. And that day shall come once your gas station runs out of fuel.

I have more respect to Arabs outside the GCC (aka “poor” Arabs) because the only thing they own is their higher IQ.
Just remember: your Tiny desert Qatar is No more than a Mobil gas station ⛽️

Personally I prefer apple, have stopped climbing trees many years ago. In reality you need every ally you can get, as you are reliant on the restrictions you are threatened with. Your assets are irrelevant if you have nothing coming through your borders. Outside UAE you are weak and will be in a similar position as Eritrea – isolated and make the same arguments to the global stage. You have more money but so what? Throwing out your toys out of your pram by removing troops doesn’t hurt Eritrea, you will need them yourself perhaps.
For the record I like Aljazeera, biased reporting on certain countries is a given and having an objective standpoint will harm overall and much more beneficial relationships. If anybody has gained an understanding of this old trick it is your country and Aljazeera.

Of all the Arabs I think Qatar and UAE are good even though they will use you but they will give you something in return like investment, the Saudis will only use you and Egypt is literally poor country.

Eritrean leaders should follow the Somali leaders because the Somali leaders are very smart when it comes to dealings with these Arabs, they kno which Arab pays a lot and which Arab doesn’t pay.

Somalia an Arab member refused to cut ties with Qatar why? Because Qatar is not only Allied with Turkish which has strong ties with Somalia but lately Qatar has been gaining a foothold in Somalia carrying all kinds of investments, the UAE is also in Somalia doing lots of investment like helping the Somali National army to combat the al shabab terrorists, donating military resources, paving roads, building hospitals etc, and then there’s Turkey building a military base in Mogadishu, Somalia really needs Turkey because the Saudis have been importing the extremists salafi Islam in Somalia since 1992, and Turkey which is a Sufi Islam will be good for Somalia, as Turkey is taking more Somali students to Turkey and teaching them about Sufi Islam, and Turkey is also opening lots of Sufi schools all over Somalia.

Turkey is the biggest investor in Somalia followed by Qatar and the UAE, so why should Somalia listen to the Saudis and the Egyptians the warmongers nations to destroy Somalia all over again?

I kno Eritrea is at war with Ethiopia but the Eritrean leaders should start to their brain more, the Saudis and Egyptians won’t give you anything so go after those countries that will give something in return like china, Turkey, Qatar, UAE, UK, USA, Japan, Russia etc the last thing you want is poor Egypt and the extremists salafi nation of Saudi Arabia.

In my opinion, the government of Eritrea and its organs SHOULD leave Qatar and Al Jazeera alone. This is the WORST time to criticize Al Jazeera.
Qatar has more money and investments than God. As such, Qatar is going nowhere and Aljazeera has now a life of its own which is pretty much uncontrollable. The Emir of Qatar wouldn’t dare to interfere.
