There was support for a serious rethink of engagement and examining ways of strengthening support to Somalia at the High-Level Meeting on Somalia that was co-hosted by Ethiopia, Italy, Somalia and the United Kingdon in New York.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and Africa Union Commission Chairperson Moussa Faki was present in the meeting.
The Eritrean delegation led by Foreign Minister Osman Saleh also expressed his country’s strong support to the people and government of Somalia.
The below is excerpts of the remarks made by FM Osman at the High-Level Meeting that was held on September 27, 2018, in New York.
Remarks by H.E. Mr. Osman Saleh,
Minister of Foreign Affairs of the State of Eritrea
During the High-Level Meeting on Somalia
New York, 27 September 2018
Eritrea wishes to take the floor to express strong support to the people and government of Somalia.
As you are aware, Eritrea and Somalia recently signed a joint declaration on friendship and comprehensive cooperation in the political, economic, social, security and defense arenas.
Subsequent to that, in a trilateral summit convened in Asmara, the government of Ethiopia, Somalia and Eritrea agreed to forge close and wide-ranging cooperation as to work in concert for regional peace, security, and sustainable development.
The recent positive developments in the Horn of Africa will undoubtedly have a salutary impact on the situation in Somalia. We believe that now more than any time in the past, the situation is favorable for Somalia to overcome its difficulties and once again stand on its feet.
The current environment requires that there is a serious rethink of engagement with Somalia. We all need to accept that the people of Somalia need to be in the driving seat. They have substantial experience, capacity, and resources to draw upon.
Meanwhile, external support and available resources need to be directed primarily at strengthening the capacity of the government.
The multiplicity of external actors, often working at cross-purpose to each other, have to scale back their presence and actions and allow for the people and government of Somalia to take more and more responsibility.
We are confident that Somalia will re-emerge as a peaceful, strong and united nation that contributes significantly to regional cooperation and prosperity.
I thank you!
