Eritrea Celebrates a Quarter Century of Independence

diaspora Independence day marching
Thousands of yesterday’s refugees have returned back to Eritrea to celebrate the 25th independence anniversary, marching enthusiastically under two flags: one that of their country of origin and another of their host country!

By Colette Braeckman | for Le Soir,

While Eritrea is known to send every year thousands of young people to try their luck on the dangerous roads of exile, this time it is towards Asmara that the additional flights had to be provided in because of the crowds!

Coming from the US, Canada, all European countries especially Italy and the Scandinavian countries, thousands of Eritreans in the Diaspora were keen to return home to celebrate the 25th anniversary of independence of the youngest African states. Yesterday refugees, very critical of a regime that imposes unlimited “national service” after 18 months of actual military service, many young people, now bi-national, had repeated the journey in the other direction and they marched enthusiastically under two flags, that of their country of origin and that of their host country!

This quarter century of independence was the occasion for a sober party, cheerful, where the independent Eritrea showed that she was best: musicians and dancers from all regions of the country, a multicultural face where Christians of Highlands rub smoothly Muslim Sudanese plains, where the various national languages taught in schools are superimposed without rivalry.

But above all, before the parade of young and before an impressive choreography reminiscent of similar events in China or Korea, Eritrea had wanted to remember the essential: the small country of 6 million inhabitants is still a nation on war foot. Here one has forgotten that it was by arms, after thirty years of struggle, that the independence was won at the highest price, tens of thousands of deaths, the exodus of 900,000 people, the departure of last Italian colonists ….

Instead of presenting the achievements of the regime, however real, in education and health, among others, President Isaias Afeworki, absolute ruler of the country since independence, preferred to give a history lesson to younger generations. He reminded the Italian colonization, annexation by Ethiopia, the fifty years of armed struggle to finally reach an independence that was never really accepted by Ethiopia.

The stern face behind his sunglasses, the always straight silhouette Issaias Afeworki remained a warlord, a sort of helmsman deserts and highlands. Again, he tried to mobilize his people pointing enemies that seem to be eternal, the Ethiopian neighbor, who had never given up his win access to the sea via the Eritrean port of Assab or Masswa, and, behind Addis Ababa, the real opponent, that is to say, the United States, although committed, today as yesterday, wanting to break the resistance of a country decided to refuse a certain world order.

After recalling the battles, international arbitration regarding a disputed border, the president denounced the recent attacks, carried out in other areas: disinformation and asylum policy. He assured that it is with the blessing of the U.S. President that Eritreans are being almost automatically grant refugee status when they arrive in the host country. This opening, coupled with misinformation and “demonization” of Eritrea in the international press would, according to him, allowed the development of “human trafficking” and the proliferation of smugglers…

This siege mentality is marked by low diplomatic representation in the ceremonies commemorating the independence, only marked by the presence of a large Sudanese delegation.

However, Eritrea has no shortage of prospects and could see the “friends” shoving border in time to come: besides the discovery of significant mineral deposits, oil could soon be operated on the banks of the Red Sea. Dominant ceremonies, a huge poster also showed the two axes of the future development of the country: cultivated fields and offshore oil rig

Until this country still cultivating a haughty isolation resume its place on the international scene, it is in a “self between” happy and friendly as the inhabitants of Asmara partied alongside their parents in the diaspora returned laden with trunks and gifts: during these exceptional days of installed podiums in the main streets have hosted dozens of singers and musicians, all dressed children watched late into the night, sitting in a small bar behind his beer, Haile, a “veteran” showed us the reduced scarring Keren and Massawa in the 80, saying that this fight there, which he sacrificed his youth, was worth and he regretted nothing … * A software translation from French

  1. Eritrea’s “independent” is the WORST thing that has ever happend to eritreans….. I want one of you (PFDJ) drones to admit this….!!!

Damn, Even Mengistu Haile Mariam never had these many prisons. What has happened to the so called independence? Here is a list of known Eritrean prisons to the outside world. There also many other hidden dungeons in the country side and former residential house inside many cities including Asmara that serve as makeshift secrete prisons. This is how Eritrea is celebrating 25 years of slavery:

  2. kkkk…. did I hit a nerve with my previous fact based comment, Tesf…?!
    Okay how about this…

A countries freedom is measured by the values and liberties and quality of life it creates for it citizens , not by which war they were winning. Independent the land and enslave the people Is no Independent.

    1. You are mistaken. True freedom is spiritual, it has nothing to do with “quality of life”.

Otherwise ask yourself why are so many “poor” people happy and generous and why are so many “rich” people so miserable despite all the material benefits they have?

    2. stewie , take a little time and look at your country, Ethiopia , wether all those you mentioned are available or not before you jump in to talk meaningless that makes you a total idiot. you can’t share, if you don’t have it.

    3. According to Dedebit University,
A country’s freedom is actually measured by the number of its people eating 3 meals per day (aka starving).

      1. And according to sawa 101, freedom is defined by how many of one’s family members are refugees. BTW I saw none of the famous artists and comedians on your celebrations. Shall I search them around Mediterranean?

      2. Who eat 3 meals per day?kkkkkkkkk ስደተኛ ለማኝ kkkkk came to Addis and ???? ur sisters working prostitutes haha u r right they eat 3 meals per day hahaha u made my day!

        1. Biniam,

I won’t call your Mother any bad name, as I am sure they have nothing to do with your Language Skills and IQ63 …
In any case, here are the “wise” words of your Chiwawa Leader x-PM, x-Alive Meles promising your starving people the impossible thing in your Mama Ethiopia of 3000 years history.

  3. Interesting article, sprinkled with some typical western blabberisim. But the quote below caught my attention:

“However, Eritrea has no shortage of prospects and could see the “friends” shoving border in time to come: besides the discovery of significant mineral deposits, oil could soon be operated on the banks of the Red Sea. Dominant ceremonies, a huge poster also showed the two axes of the future development of the country: cultivated fields and offshore oil rig …”

    1. Oil in Eritrean waters · Edit

You noticed that too, TGY. I think there is definitely something to the offshore oil and gas exploration being about to start in Eritrean waters. We never used to hear about this and now all of a sudden it’s in every article that mentions Europe and Eritrea in the same article. Shabia is usually cautious and never says anyting until it’s materialized and production is guaranteed. So all this chatter now about the oil and gas in Eritrean waters makes me think Eritrea is ready to start exploiting it in the near future to try to meet Europe’s growing appetite for oil.

      1. I hesrd there’re was a US company as well, in Eritrea, talking with the govt about prospects in bying blocks.

  4. Hello All:

Though incomplete, quite reasonable and balanced Article, lost in translation at times, understandably!
Speaking of under- representation of the International Community,I found it quite a bit true and I am wondering why !
A friend of mine told me,speculation????,that TPLF Gov circulated a warning to the Diplomatic Corpse in Addis about a security risk of attending the Silver Jubilee in Asmera!!
    Makes sense?
    But who cares and cared.????
The ERITREAN People celebrated it in a unique way and in the most peaceful way without a single incident of any security bridge or even a case of injury or illness to my best knowledge.
The International Artists and Tourists expressed it on the behalf of all with no bias and prejudice.
It indeed makes you to feel and to be PROUD to be ERITREAN irrespective of what and no matter what….is going on and what has gone so far.

      1. Grateful Eritrean · Edit

You got him,he thinks he so clever he could fool Eritreans with his conflicting comments.he may think he is a smooth operator, but his true Weyane color betray him on his next comment. So i would like to remind him not to overestimate his tiny Weyane brain.

      1. Racist comments are deforming TN, please guys let’s refrain from these acts and don’t make our hate/enmity with weyane drive us to offend the entire people of Tigray.

        1. Well, if they stop pretending to be Eritrean before they spew their venom and even better leave our sovereign land…

          1. This conflict is with WEYANE, the majority people of Tigray has nothing to do with it. Any war or conflict between two governments remains politics between the existing governments while the relationship between the people of the two countries remains constant and it is restored once the problem is solved.

          2. We don’t see it that way. Before Weyane became a government, Tigrayans in Asmara were collaborating with Mengistu and causing great damage to Eritrean families and households. Before that, there is the whole history of LIBI TIGRAY and Ras Weldenkiel. Because of their inferiority complex, they are always looking to damage and hurt Eritreans. It’s not limited to Weyane. History keeps repeating itself.

          3. @Selam,
You are right, the majority of Ugumpesh have nothing to do with Woyane, it is just the other 99% of the QUENTY Pickers that hate Eritreans.

          4. ኣሌክ - Alec you · Edit

Is that why they are masquerading as Eritreans all over Europe because they are not WEYANE?? Every Tigrayan/Agame are hellbent on destroying our beloved Eritrea, they are destroying Eritrea’s image. How come they are doing that if they have good intentions towards Eritrea or Eritreans?? And i thought u were Eritrean.. but i see now, that u are not. Cuz u are so offended by that word Agame. Like it or not 99% of Tigrayans/Agame are the enemies of Eritrea now and before. We saw their evil act more clearly in 90s.

“Any war or conflict between two governments..”– LOL.. THIS ppl were dancing in the streets when Eritrea was under-attack by their beloved woyane, thinking this war is the end of Eritrea. Tigrayans they want Eritrea to vanish. that’s is the truth u have hard time swallowing.

እወ, ቅድም Agame took advantage of the kind Eritrean heart, but now they will never see that kind heart from us==>>this generation, because we learned from the mistakes of our forefathers that u ppl stabbed in the back. But this generation, we’re ‘Agame-deception-proof’ like Bulletproof!!.

        2. Grateful Eritrean · Edit

Are you that naive to believe Weyane came from no where. Weyane is a part of tigrayans.99% of Tigrayans hate anything Eritrean, and they are sleepless to see the distraction of Eritrea and Eritreans. And i believe you are a Tigrayan. We didn’t want to hate them, but they made us to hate and despise them through their actions. In the end the hate that they cultivated all over Horn of Africa will consume them. They will reap what they saw. That is the rule of nature.

  5. Yes, indeed. Eritrean impressive military parade deserved to compare with level of Chinese and Koreans. it was by far a very unique and perfect! you can hardly see it in Africa.

    1. By far it is this is the biggest Independence Celebration in the world since no other nation on this planet celebrates its independence like we do. That also is a testimony.

    2. I don’t know about compare it to the Chinese & Koran parade. We still have long ways to go before we can compare ourselves. Plus we shouldn’t be comparing parades. I rather compare other things such as economy.

      1. Bro. Military parades are the way of sending strong message about toughness and readiness for any eventuality to all unfriendly entities beyond marking of the celebration day. look, The Russian military parades every year display new military inventions to say hey, west, dont mess with us and give us some respect. Specially Eritrean economis need strong military protection because of the green eyes in the south . I assume millions people in Ethiopia watched it lives and good to respect each other.

  6. New stats from the ministry of Labor and human welfare in Eritrea: “1billion Naqfa contributed by eritreans from 2005-2015, to help martyrs families.”

  7. Yesterday refugees, very critical of a regime that imposes unlimited “national service” after 18 months of actual military service, many young people, now bi-national, had repeated the journey in the other direction and they marched enthusiastically under two flags, that of their country of origin and that of their host country!

    ነዓይ እንኳዕ ጠዓመኒ እንድዩ ነገሩ

    1. I do not remember Eritreans showing their adapted country’s flag in Eritrean independence day until this years impressive 25th independence anniversary. What I understand from the marching with their adapted country’s flags is to show the world that has been bombarded with media lies, Do not believe anyone’s lies, we Eritreans who left our country for Economic or any other reason are back in Eritrea with the Heroes and Heroines of Eritrea.
@Selam, Do you see how Eritrean Haters are killing themselves?

  10. It is really a mind boggling and puzzling to read at tesfanews comment area balanced ……” someone commending the most negative, condescending & demeaning article as “quite reasonable and
Show me where is the balance & fairness in her presentation. What I see all over her writings is a bold face & white lies, condescending & belittling remarks of the nation, the people & our leader calling him a warlord, a leader we highly admire who is a father to all Eritrean children and a brother to all of us.

Are you agreeing that Eritrean parents or the government itself willfully & wittingly sent their children to Sahara desert to be slaughtered for organ harvest and several hundreds of them to be drown mercilessly by design in a foreign high sea, when she states “While Eritrea is known to send every year thousands of young people to try their luck on the dangerous roads of exile, ………”

Here below is also another lie. How could be possible for yesterday refuges, instead of yesterday’s victims of Eritrean traitors and their paymasters NGO who in many ways lured and pressured to leave their country can financially afford to return, besides the fear of losing their status for returning as the European authorities threaten them to do so? Read her lie below and think hard again.

“Yesterday refugees, very critical of a regime that imposes unlimited “national service” after 18 months of actual military service, many young people, now bi-national, had repeated the journey in the other direction and they marched”

The following belittling and condescending statement cannot under any circumstance be balanced & fair. This article should not even be allowed to be posted in this so called Eritrean patriotic website. In my humble opinion no country loving & and self-respecting Eritrean would stoop himself so low as to allow such insulting, denigrating & condescending article in his website, like those hell bent & arch enemy of Eritrea, such as asmarino.com, awate.com, meskerem.com and so on and so forth. Read below her belittling & condescending remarks of the president that we Eritrean admire and love for what he is.

“President Isaias Afeworki, absolute ruler of the country since independence. The stern face behind his sunglasses, the always straight silhouette Issaias Afeworki remained a warlord, a sort of helmsman deserts and highlands.”

This woman has been known for more than 3 decays in Africa for her warmongering activities. And the following statements of her testify to such effect.

“Again, he tried to mobilize his people pointing enemies that seem to be eternal, the Ethiopian neighbor, who had never given up his win access to the sea via the Eritrean port of Assab or Masswa, and, behind Addis Ababa, the real opponent, that is to say, the United States, although committed, today as yesterday, wanting to break the resistance of a country decided to refuse a certain world order.”

This stupid lady is trying to tell us that the real internationally devised siege by which Eritrean people are still paying enormous price, such as multiple sanction, psychological warfare thrown day in day out by her masters, the purposefully created no war no peace condition, the endless demonization & blackmailing of the nation utilizing everything at their disposal, including the shameless and irrelevant UN to subjugate the nation & people of Eritrean can & shall not be under any circumstance a siege in our mind that she tried to portrait. Read the following and see what kind of article she has presented on behalf of her paymaster the Global NGO or others die hard enemies of Eritrea
“This siege mentality is marked by low diplomatic representation in the ceremonies commemorating the independence, only marked by the presence of a large Sudanese delegation.”

Colette Blackman, nicknamed rumormonger, actually she is warmongering. Remember she is not independent, rather she is a hired gun of co-prorate media and I also suspect she also works for both Global NGO & the so called Humanitarian organizations.
